The United States Supreme Court released a decision on New Jersey's appeal of the 1992 PAPSA law. This law that President George H.W. Bush signed restricted sports betting in the United States. Nevada has had a virtual monopoly on it for 26 years. The three states of Delaware, Oregon, and Montana that offered more limited betting like a parlay card in Delaware's case were "grandfathered in". New Jersey's Monmouth Park features to be ground zero for sports betting. The horse track has been working with the British company William Hill for a while now. They created a race/sports book bar in their horse track facility because they were so bullish on the prospects of sports betting becoming legalized. Monmouth Park officials have been forecasting May 28th as their first day. Folks will be able to bet in person at Monmouth Park and also probably using the William Hill betting app on their smart phone. There are rumblings that some Atlantic City casinos like the new Ocean or Hard Rock resorts will be investing in building sportsbooks later this year. Interestingly, the meadowlands horse track is reportedly taking a wait and see approach. The states of Delaware will probably be second. "If it is permissible under the (Supreme Court) opinion, full-scale sports gaming could be available at Delaware’s casinos before the end of June,” Gov. John Carney said in a release. Delaware is known for horse tracks like Delaware Park which currently offer simple parlay cards. West Virginia has an interesting twist. Marshall and West Virginia University are negotiating for some of the potential gaming revenue. Mississippi is also aiming for a June start date which would be 45 days from the ruling. West Virginia has a few horse tracks also like Hollywood Casino and Races in Charlestown. There are certain states that do not allow gambling like Utah and Alabama. However, most state constitutions are not as rigid or dogmatic. The number of states legalizing sports betting is expected to take off after the first wave of New Jersey, Delaware, MS, and West Virginia. If you live in one of the first wave states perhaps keep an eye on facebook pages of your local casinos or horse tracks to follow when they will be opening up!
